  • Description

President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire has suggested the setting up of a Conference of Africa's economy and finance ministers.

The President made the suggestion in Kinshasa on Monday (3 May) while opening meetings of the African Development Bank and the African Fund for Development.

He said he would introduce the suggestion formally at the summit conference of the Organisation of African Unity in Mauritius next month.

President Mobutu added that the Conference he envisaged would become a permanent organisation whose task would be to draft an African economic charter.

Under agreements signed on Monday night, the African Development Bank is to make loans to Cameroun, Guinea, Mauritania and Zaire.

The Cameroun loan will be used to complete construction of an international airport, while Guinea will use its loan to help finance modernisation and development of its telecommunications network and to improve and develop water distribution in the country.

Mauritania will also invest in a telecommunications project while Zaire will use the money to meet the revised cost of building bridges on a new road from Kinshasa to Kenya.
