  • Description

Working in the ruins of the ancient city of Olympia, Western Peloponnese, Greece, a German Archaeological Team, headed by Professor Emmanuel Kunze, recently unearthed many important finds from a well near the old sports stadium - used for Olympic Games some 2,500 years ago.

Included in their discoveries were some marble starting blocks used by ancient Greek athletes during track and field games. Other finds were statuettes, pieces of warriors' armour, vases, a magnificently preserved copper shield and a Bas-relief.

Skilled workers, under the supervision of the German Archaeological Team, have unearthed and excavated most of the vast Olympic Stadium. Greek athletic circles intend organizing international athletic meetings in the stadium, where, 25 centuries ago, Greek athletes competed before audiences estimated at 45,000.

It is hoped that by the end of this year's excavation season the whole of the ancient Olympic Stadium will be unearthed and partially restored.
