Significant gains in Delhi were part of the general swing to Mrs. Indira Gandhi's Congress party which became obvious at an early stage in the counting of votes in the Indian Elections.
The Congress Party won three seats by large margins in the capital from the sitting right-wing Jana Sangh members.
Today it was confirmed that Mrs. Gandhi had won an absolute majority in the Indian House of parliament and looked set to hold about 250 of all seats when all the results are in.
Mrs. Gandhi's party had only a minority in the last parliament.
