  • Description

Two thousand fire-fighters have been working day and night to control the brush fire which broke out some days ago north of Los Angeles, California.

The fire has destroyed a number of houses, and threatened suburban communities north of the city. 7000 acres of brush, which controls the run-off of water during the spring floods, has been burnt out. Aircraft and helicopters have been used for spraying chemicals and dropping water bombs in an effort to fight the flames.

Fire fighting has been made difficult by changes in wind direction, and as the fire entered its fourth day the prospects for bringing it under control were not hopeful. Los Angeles - lying under its usual belt of smog - was choking with the unwelcome addition of heavy clouds of drifting smoke.
