  • Description

MELVIN NIMER, JR., DISCHARGED FROM BELLEVUE HOSPITAL, HEADED FOR UTAH TODAY WHERE HE WILL LIVE WITH HIS GRANDPARENTS AND HIS ORPHANED YOUNGER BROTHER AND SISTER.

BELLVUE PSYCHIATRISTS HAD COMPLETED SIX WEEKS OF TESTS ON THE EIGHT-YEAR-OLD BOY, WHO HAD FIRST ADMITTED THE KNIFE SLAYING OF HIS PARENTS ON STATEN ISLAND AND THEN HAD TAKEN THE STORY BACK.

THEY CONCLUDED THAT HE WAS SUFFERING FROM AN EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCE AND REQUIRED PSYCHIATRIC CARE. THIS HE WILL RECEIVE IN OREM, UTAH (CQ), WHERE HIS GRANDPARENTS LIVE.

A BOY, WHOSE MIND HOLDS THE MEMORY OF HIS PARENTS' MURDER, LEFT BELLEVUE HOSPITAL TODAY. EIGHT-YEAR-OLD MELVIN NIMER, JUNIOR -- WHO ONCE COMPRESSED KILLING HIS MOTHER AND FATHER IN THEIR STATEN ISLAND HOME -- WAS RELEASED AFTER A MONTH OF PSYCHIATRIC EXAMINATION.

DOCTORS AT BELLVUE SAY THAT YOUNG NIMER WAS EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED BEFORE -- AND AFTER -- THE SEPTEMBER SECOND SLAYING. POLICE STILL DO NOT KNOW WHO STABBED 31-YEAR-OLD DOCTOR MELVIN NIMER AND HIS WIFE. MELVIN FIRST SAID THAT HE DID IT.....THEN RECANTED.

THE BOY WAS PLANKED BY HIS GRANDMOTHER....MRS. DEAN PARK (CQ)....AND HIS UNCLE, DOCTOR HAROLD NIMER (CQ).....BROTHER OF THE SLAIN MAN. THE YOUNGSTER CLUTCHED A GAME UNDER ONE ARM.....A FOOTBALL UNDER THE OTHER.

THEY SEEMED TO SYMBOLIZE THE NORMAL WORLD OF CHILDHOOD....A WORLD TO WHICH MELVIN HAD BEEN A STRANGER SINCE THE TERRIBLE NIGHT ON STATEN ISLAND. HE IS RETURNING WITH HIS UNCLE AND GRANDMOTHER TO THE FAMILY HOME IN OREN (CQ), UTAH. THERE -- IT'S HOPED -- HIS [QUERY] EMOTIONS CAN BE LOOSENED BY FURTHER PSYCHIATRIC CARE....AND LOVE.

THE BELLVUE REPORT MADE NO COMMENT ON THE BOY'S KNOWLEDGE OF THE CRIME. TO POLICE.....IT IS STILL A MYSTERY.....ALTHOUGH THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. AT THE WHEEL OF THE CAR THAT TOOK MELVIN FROM THE HOSPITAL WAS LAWYER HARRIS STEINBERG (CQ)....WHO....FROM THE FIRST....HAS BEEN CONVICTED THAT THE BOY WAS INNOCENT.

TODAY, HE LEFT THE HOSPITAL IN THE COMPANY OF HIS GRANDMOTHER AND HIS UNCLE, DR. HAROLD NIMER. (CQ) HE CARRIED A SMALL FOOTBALL, A STUFFED ANIMAL AND OTHER TOYS IN HIS ARMS AS HE FACED HIS FINAL ORDEAL IN NEW YORK -- THE PHOTOGRAPHERS.

HIS LAWYER, HARRIS STEINBERG (CQ), SAID THERE WOULD BE NO DUCKING OUT THE BACK WAY TO AVOID THE PRESS AND THE CAMERAS. THE BOY WAS FREE OF ANY CHARGE AND NEEDED KINDNESS AND CARE. MR. STEINBERG DROVE MELVIN TO THE AIRPORT.

NEW YORK POLICE ARE STILL TRYING TO SOLVE THE BAFFLING CRIME, WHICH HAS CAUSED SO MUCH TRAGEDY IN THE MELVIN NIMER FAMILY.

IN NEW YORK -- CROWDS OF NEWS-MEN AND PHOTOGRAPHERS WAITED OUTSIDE BELLVUE HOSPITAL'S PSYCHIATRIC DIVISION FOR THE RELEASE OF AN EIGHT-YEAR OLD BOY.

THE FINAL CHAPTER OF A BIZARRE STORY. MELVIN DEAN NIMER, JUNIOR (CQ), HUGGING A FOOTBALL AND ESCORTED BY HIS UNCLE AND GRANDMOTHER - WAS FINALLY LEAVING AFTER A SEVEN-WEEK LONG NIGHT-MARE. THIS CHILD WAS HELD BY POLICE AS A SUSPECT IN THE MURDER OF HIS MOTHER AND FATHER IN THEIR HOME LAST SEPTEMBER. DEAN TOLD POLICE HE KILLED HIS PARENTS - AND THEN CHANGED HIS STORY. DOCTORS SAID HE WAS AN EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED CHILD, WHO PROBABLY HAD DEVELOPED GUILT FEELINGS AFTER SEEING THE DEATH OF HIS PARENTS. TODAY - DEAN LEFT AFTER WEEKS OF PSYCHIATRIC TREATMENT - WHILE POLICE WERE STILL LOOKING FOR LEADS IN THE MURDER. DEAN WAS GOING BACK TO UTAH TO LIVE WITH HIS GRANDMOTHER AND TRY TO RESUME THE NORMAL LIFE OF AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD BOY. HE HAD NEVER LIKED NEW YORK. DOCTORS SAY HE STILL REQUIRES CONTINUING PSYCHIATRIC SUPERVISION. SOME DAY HE MAY FORGET ALL THIS.
