  • Description

Fleets of heavy transport vehicles are being used in Zambia to carry vital copper exports to Tanzania. Zambia refused to ship the copper by rail through Rhodesia after Mr. Jan Smith's regime closed the border to virtually all traffic except Zambian copper exports. The Zambia-Tanzania Road Services Company says it has assembled more than a thousand of its own and sub-contractors' vehicles to move the copper.

Rhodesia announced the border would be sealed on January 9 following increased guerrilla activity in the region.

SYNOPSIS: Fleets of heavy transport vehicles have been pressed into use to transport copper from Zambia to Tanzania by road. Zambia refused to ship the copper by rail through Rhodesia after Mr. Ian Smith's regime closed the border to virtual all traffic except Zambia's copper exports. The copper produced here at the Rokana Mine complex in Kitwe is vital to Zambia's economy.

The emergency system of road transport is now operating more efficiently than it was when Zambia first decided to boycott the railway through Rhodesia. The Zambia- Tanzania Road Service Company says it has now assembled more than a thousand vehicles for the convoys. After carrying copper to Tanzania, the heavy vehicles are used to move imports which, before the border closure, came through Rhodesia. Mr. Smith announced that most traffic would be halted on January the ninth following increased guerrilla activity in the region.

The road haulage is being used in conjunction with the partially completed railway line, inland from the Tanzanian coast.
