  • Description

INDIAN AIR DEFENCES HAVE BEEN TESTED DURING THE PAST WEEK DURING A TRAINING EXERCISE. TECHNICIANS NEWLY-TRAINED IN THE USE OF RECENTLY INSTALLED EQUIPMENT SUCH AS RADAR HAVE ALSO BEEN EXAMINED. WORKING IN CO-OPERATION WITH GROUND-CONTROL IN NORTHERN INDIA ARE SQUADRONS OF FOLLAND GNATS, HAWKER HUNTERS AND AMERICAN F-100s.

THESE AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN STANDING BY AT THE END OF RUNWAYS, WAITING FOR THE SIGNAL TO TAKE-OFF AND INTERCEPT THE "ENEMY". THE AIRCRAFT ATTEMPTING TO BREAK THROUGH THE PROTECTIVE SCREEN ARE INDIAN AND ROYAL AUSTRALIAN CANBERRA BOMBERS. CONFIRMATION OF 'KILLS' BY THE FIGHTERS, AND 'TARGETS' REACHED BY THE BOMBERS, IS DONE BY CAMERAS MOUNTED IN THE AIRCRAFT.

FIRST REPORTS OF THE EXERCISE ALARMED THE AUTHORITIES. AN INDIAN AIR MINISTRY SPOKESMAN SAID ON SUNDAY THAT A LARGE MAJORITY OF "ENEMY" BOMBERS BROKE THROUGH BRITISH AND INDIAN INTERCEPTOR DEFENCES IN A SIMULATED ATTACK ON THE CALCUTTA INDUSTRIAL REGION. SUBSEQUENTLY, RADAR AND COMMUNICATIONS HAVE BEGUN WORKING TOGETHER SO THAT LATER FEW ATTACKERS GOT THROUGH THE SCREEN.
