Background: Supporters of the late General George Grivas gathered outside a memorial service for their dead leader in Athens Cathedral on Sunday (10 March). They vowed to carry on his struggle for Enosis -- the union of Cyprus and Greece.

During the service they distributed leaflets accusing President Makarios of Cyprus of betraying Enosis. Afterwards -- outside -- they chanted slogans such as "Greece", "Cyprus" and "Enosis".

The service for General Grivas, who died in Cyprus on 27 January, was attended by Mr. Constantine Rallis, Minister to the Greek Prime Minister (representing the Government) and was conducted by the Archbishop of Athens, Archbishop Seraphim.

About 1,500 people attended the service for the late General who led the EOKA organisation in its campaign against British rule in the 1950's, which ended in independence for Cyprus. Failure to achieve union with Greece prompted the General to resume his struggle against President Makarios last year with a new guerrilla organisation, called EOKA B.

The leaflets distributed in Athens Cathedral, published by General Grivas' political organisation ESEA (the Committee for Coordination of the Enosis Struggle) said President Makarios hated Enosis because it would deprive him of power.

The leaflet said: "We will not betray the sacred aims. We will help out Cyprus with all our strength. We will continue the relentless struggle started by General Grivas -- the visionary of Enosis. We will crush all and whatever stands as an obstacle to the final goal".
