  • Description

A company of officer cadets who rebelled against their officers at Vientiane's Chinaimo Military Academy, returned to their barracks on Tuesday (13 May).

Two Government Ministers and the Army commander told the cadets they accepted their demands for the removal from the camp of the ten-member staff of the former Army commander and all troops in excess of one battalion.

The cadets' other demand -- that the commander of the Vientiane-based fifth military region be sacked -- had already been carried out.

The cadets left the technical college after their camp dormitories had been searched for bombs they feared might have been planted by right-wing troops within their academy.

Sixty Pathet-Lao security men were posted to guard the dormitories.

Meanwhile, three companies of cadets at the Vientiane police academy declared their support for the new coalition and barred their officers from the building.

They accused the officers of corruption and neglect of duty. At one stage, machine guns were used by the cadets to back up their demands that the officers stay out of the academy.
