    INTRODUCTION
A five-man delegation of the Japanese Communist Party arrived in Rome on Monday (10 January) for a ten-day visit to Italy. The visit began with a four-day meeting with Italian Communist Party leaders.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting took place at Communist Party headquarters in Rome. Luigi Longo, President of the Italian Communist Party, and Enrico Berlinguer, Party Secretary, were on hand for the talks. The five-man Japanese delegation came at the invitation of the Italian party.

The Japanese team was led by a member of the Party's Presidium, Mr. Tetsuzo Fuwa. The two delegations met to exchange information and opinions about the situation in their respective countries, and the policies which communist parties should promote. Italy and Japan are both recovering from recent general elections. The Italian Communist Party picked up more votes and more parliamentary seats than ever last June. The Japanese party, on the other hand, lost 22 seats in December.

The Japanese will also be visiting communist centres in Genoa and Naples before returning to Rome for more talks with Central Committee members. During their initial stay in the capital, they met the editor of the Italian Communist Party Daily, L'Unita, before leaving for Pisa for talks with local party officials.
