  • Description

At BP's Grangemouth installation in Scotland is a new plant, the first of its kind in the world. Its product may signal the solution to one of the world's greatest problems - how to feed its expanding population.

This is its product - Toprina, yeast protein grown on petroleum. 4,000 tons of it a year.

Yeasts which are rich in protein have been used in bakeries and for making been and wine for thousands of years.

Tens of thousands of animals have been raised on the new protein. The trials have proved its safety beyond doubt and confirmed its nutritional value over several generations.

BP Toprina will be used for intensive fish farming, for the feeding of poultry of all kinds, and the raising of calves, and pigs.

By producing protein from an entirely new source BP have taken a big step forward in helping to solve the world's food problem.
