  • Description

AT THE ROYAL INTERNATIONAL HORSE SHOW IN LONDON TODAY (WEDNESDAY) 49 COMPETITORS TOOK PART IN THE FINAL JUDGING FOR THE LIBERIA AWARD FOR THE AMATEUR DRIVING MARATHON. IT IS AN EVENT FOR PONIES IN HARNESS WHICH ARE DRIVEN AS SINGLES, PAIRS OR TANDEMS.

THE FINAL WAS STAGED IN FOUR SECTIONS WITH INDIVIDUAL PRIZES FOR EACH CLASS, BUT THE LIBERIA AWARD WAS PRESENTED TO THE OVERALL WINNER. THE EVENT IS AIMED AT TESTING THE CONTROL OF THE DRIVER AND THE STAMINA OF THE HORSE OVER A LONG DISTANCE. IN THE ELIMINATION HEATS, THE ENTRANTS WERE REQUIRED TO DRIVE THEIR HORSES OVER A DISTANCE OF SIX MILES. SPEED IS NOT TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.

IN THE FINAL, THE DISTANCE WAS NOT AS GREAT, BUT IT WAS FAR ENOUGH TO GIVE THE JUDGES A LONG AND CAREFUL LOOK AT EACH COMBINATION. THE OVERALL WINNER WAS ASHROYD MYSTIC GLEAM, DRIVEN BY MRS. B.H. MELLOR. SHE WAS PRESENTED WITH THE AWARD BY THE LIBERIAN AMBASSADOR, MR. M.T. WALKER.

THE AWARD WAS PRESENTED FOR PERPETUAL COMPETITION BY PRESIDENT TUBMAN, OF LIBERIA, TO COMMEMORATE THE VISIT OF QUEEN ELIZABETH TO THE REPUBLIC IN 1961.
