  • Description

Millions of Algerian voters went to the polls yesterday, 14 February 1971, to elect their representatives on more than 700 local councils throughout the country.

There is only one political party in Algeria, the F.L.N. All the election are members of it. There are 20,886 of them standing for 10,443 seats in the Assemblees Populaires Communales. The Algerian Army has played a considerable role in supervising the elections. In souther Algeria, army lorries delivered and collected the ballot boxes in outlying villages and among the camps of Sahara nomads.

There are about six million voters. Just under 70-per-pent of them voted in the last local election four years ago.
