  • Description

A vast gathering of Bamangwato tribesmen - and also many Europeans- attended the funeral of Tshekedi Khama, the famous African leader, at the burial place of the tribal chieftains high above the town of Serowe. The funeral - attended by Tshekedi Khama's widow, by Seretse Khama (for whom Tshekedi Khama acted as Regent) and his English-born wife, Ruth, - was filmed by Visnews June 17.

Tshekedi Khama's body had been brought from London where he died in hospital aged 53 on June 10. For a week preceding the funeral tribesmen had been trekking into Serowe and many of them spent the night before the ceremony out in the open huddled round fires on one of the coldest winter nights this year for the area. Soon after dawn they formed a procession round the coffin, examining the wreaths. The grave was close to that of Tshekedi's father, the great Chief Khama.
