In the Canadian parliament on Thursday (9 February), the Canadian Minister for External Affairs, Mr. Donald Jamieson, announced that Canada was expelling 11 Soviet diplomats for spying. He also said that two other Russians who had already left the country would not be allowed to return. The 13 Soviet diplomats are said to have taken part in an elaborate spy plot involving a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
