Background: In Manila, a lone Filipino gunman hijacked a Philippines Airlines ZAC-111 just before it landed yesterday on flight from Davao and held the 70 passengers and crew hostage for eight hours - most of that time on the runway 600 yards (metres) from the terminal building.

Police and armed forces personnel surrounded the airport as the gunman, tentatively identified by police as Camilo Morales, aged about 23, demanded to be flown to Libya. He carried a point-forty-five calibre pistol, a hand grenade and what he described as a bomb.

Major-General Fidel Ramos, Head of the Philippines National Police, negotiated with the gunman by radio. The distraught hijacker thought his daughter had been kidnapped last week by Government Central Intelligence agents.

The gunman released 43 passengers in small groups during the day in exchange for a vice-president of the airline and, Inter, airline stewardesses.

At dusk, after receiving a government promise that his case would be looked into, the gunman surrendered quietly and the aircraft and remaining hostages were brought into the terminal area.

Most of the hostages described the hijacker, who was whisked away for questioning, as polite and always smiling.
