    The International Conference of African Librarians opened in the Ghanaian capital, Accra on Monday (22 September) to discuss the future of library systems throughout Africa.

    The conference -- sponsored by the Ghana Library Board, the Ghana Library Association and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)-- has drawn delegates from Ghana, Uganda, Nigeria, Togo, Liberia, Senegal, Tanzania, Kenya and Sierra Leone.e
    Opening the five-day session, Ghana's Commissioner from Education and Culture, Colonel E.O. Nyante told delegates that the aim of the conference was to discuss methods of improving and developing library services to consolidate the great steps forward in education in Africa. "The development of our cultures must be accompanied by the development of our languages and literature, and you -- as librarians -- must lend your support to this venture," he said.

    Library development in Africa began a little over 25 years ago.
