of non-Europeans and a handful of European sympathisers is contrastedly without

Some 20,000 including many women listened attentively to the speeches under the
theme of the African National Congress's call for freedom for coloured peoples
in the Union then dispersed quietly.

Our cameraman reported few natives present. They had stayed away after the riot
troubles. Police in pain clothes and uniformed officer's mingled with the crowd.

Demonstrators carried banners; Let Lutuli speak - an appeal to end the
Governments ban on Chief A. Lutuli, President of the African National Congress.
