    One of City of Londons' lesser known ceremonies took place today; the admission to office of the new Lord Mayor, who was elected on Michaelmas Day. In Guildhall already showing signs of the preparations for Lord Mayors' Day, the Lord Mayor Elect, Sir Harold Gillett, takes over the Insignia from his predecessor and signs, among other things, the Indenture for the City Plate.

    The ceremony is known as the "silent change". And in silence, the Sword of State is handed to the outgoing Lord Mayor Sir Denis Truscott, who presents it to the new Lord Mayor.

    Then the Common Cryer advances with the Mace.

    The new Lord Mayor is not empowered to act until he's made the Declaration before the Judges tomorrow.
