  • Description

United States delegate at the U.N. General Assembly Francis O. Wilcox Oct 13 announced his Government's support for Soviet Premier Khrushchev's proposal that the question of colonialism should be discussed in the Assembly rather than in the Political Committee. Britain's Mr. Ormsby Gore also agreed. Both Britain and U.S.A. had overnight reversed their policy on the Khrushchev proposal.

The volte-face produced the unusual sight of Mr. Khrushchev applauding a speech by an American delegate, and praising a United Kingdom decision - although in a rather derisory manner.

Britain and USA earlier opposed Mr. Khrushchev's proposal on the ground that the matter could better be discussed in the Political Committee than in the Assembly with its set speeches and its tendency to become a propaganda platform.
