  • Description

European Common Market countries have blocked a proposal that the world community should provide 8.3 billion dollars (5,000 million sterling) a year in aid for agricultural projects in developing countries. Delegates to the United Nations World Food Council (WHC)-meeting in the Philippines capital of Manila-said in Wednesday (22 June) that a revised proposal would be put to the conference which would include only a commitment to increase development aid. The rejection of the original proposal came only two days after the conference opened (20 June). On that day, the newly-elected President of the WFC Arturo Tanco-and Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos both called for action to end hunger in developing nations.

SYNOPSIS: The five-day ministerial meeting of the 36-member WFC is the first to be held in a developing country. The council is seeking ways to build up food reserves, increase food production and ensure food supplies for the needy. Mr. Tanco-the Philippine Agriculture Secretary-was elected to the position of WFC President with the support of all members.

Mr. Tanco went on to say that the ministers must agree on an agenda to eradicate hunger from the world and red tape. This call was later emphasised by the Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos.
