  • Description

One of Belgium's greatest cyclists, Stan Ockers, who died in an accident at Antwerp about two years ago, was commemorated by an all-star race at the Palais des Sports, Brussels, on Saturday, February 8th.

A huge crowd filled the stadium to see a galaxy of world champions compete in this one hour derby motor-paced event.

And champions were just what the crowd saw in the race. Rik Van Steenbergen, world road champion; Roger Godeau, Champion of France demi-fond; Win Van Est, road champion of Holland; Walter Bucher, Swiss Champion demi-fond; Paul De Paepe, world champion demi-fond; and many others.

A few laps after the start, Paul De Paepe shot away into the lead and managed to hold off all challengers until the end of an exciting race.
