    A MAJOR BOOST FOR THE WEST AFRICAN TEXTILE INDUSTRY CAME ON FRIDAY WITH THE OPENING OF A NEW CLOTH PRINTING PLANT IN THE SENEGALESE CAPITAL OF DAKAR. THE NEW PLANT WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED BY SENEGALESE PRESIDENT M. LEOPOLD SEDAR SENGHOR.

    THE NEW PLANT WAS BUILT BY THE FRANCE-AFRICAN COMPANY, SOTIBA-SIMPAFRIC AS AN ADJUNCT TO ITS ALREADY ESTABLISHED FACTORY IN DAKAR.

    IT WILL BE THE FIRST IN AFRICA AND ONLY THE FOURTH IN THE WORLD TO MANUFACTURE WAX-PRINT TEXTILES. THIS PROCESS IS AT PRESENT CARRIED OUT ONLY IN HOLLAND, SWITZERLAND AND ENGLAND.

    IN THE OPENING THE WORKS, PRESIDENT SENGHOR, TOLD GUESTS AND VISITING DIGNITARIES SENEGAL WAS THE MOST INDUSTRIALISED FRENCH-SPEAKING COUNTRY SOUTH OF THE SAHARA, IN RELATION TO ITS POPULATION.

    PRIVATE INVESTMENT, HE SAID, WOULD ALWAYS FIND A WELCOME IN SENEGAL.

    AT PRESENT THE SOTIBA-SIMPAFRIC FACTORY IN DAKAR PRODUCE 80 MILLION METRES OF CLOTH EACH YEAR, AND THIS IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE NET SECTION.
