  • Description

Some 1,200 athletes from 12 Mediterranean countries are taking part in the Mediterranean Games, which opened in Tunis yesterday (Friday). The Games are being held in Tunis' new Olympic City, and are the biggest international sports competition ever staged in Tunisia.

Countries taking part in the Games are Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, Yugoslavia, Italy, Malta, France Spain. A total of 269 medals will be distributed in 13 athletics events.

About 50 girls will be participating in the athletes and swimming events for the first time since the inaugural Games were held in Alexandria in 1951. The Games have been held every four years since then.

After Tunisia, Italy has the biggest team at the Games -- some 200 athletes -- and is expected to reap the biggest harvest of medals. However, the first gold medal went to Mohamed Gamoudi of Tunisia.

Gamoudi won the 10,000 metres race held immediately after the official opening of the Games. Gamoudi is an Olympic Games silver medallist in the 10,000 metres event.
