    THE PRESIDENT OF SENEGAL, MR. LEOPOLD SEDAR SENGHOR LAST WEEK OPENED A NEW TUNA CANNERY AT DAKAR. ACCOMPANYING HIM WERE THE MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, MR. HABIB THIAM, THE CABINET DIRECTOR, MR. ALIOUNE SENE, AND MANY OTHER OFFICIALS.

    AFTER AN ADDRESS BY MR. PIERRE LACOUR, THE PRESIDENT OF THE CENTRAL CREDIT BANK CO-OPERATIVE, AND A REPLY BY PRESIDENT SENGHOR, THE OFFICIAL PARTY RECEIVED AN ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME FROM THE FACTORY WORKERS AS THEY TOURED VARIOUS PARTS OF THE ESTABLISHMENT.

    IN HIS SPEECH, PRESIDENT SENGHOR SAID THAT THE TUNA FISHING INDUSTRY WAS A MAJOR STEP FORWARD IN SENEGAL'S DEVELOPING ECONOMY. HE SAID IT REFLECTED THE FRIENDLY CO-OPERATION BETWEEN FRANCE AND SENEGAL.

    THE PRESIDENT EXPRESSED THE HOPE THAT SENEGAL WOULD BECOME A MAJOR FISHING COUNTRY. MR. LACOUR SAID HE THOUGHT THAT DAKAR COULD SOON BE THE CENTRE OF A BIG TUNA INDUSTRY.
