  • Description

In Spain, a time bomb has extensively damaged the French consulate in the northern Basque city of San Sebastian. The Basque separatist guerrilla group, ETA, claimed responsibility for the blast, on Friday (6 April). Two civil guards were seriously injured, but their lives are not in danger.

SYNOPSIS: ETA's military wing has accused the French government of collaborating with Spanish authorities in a crackdown on suspected ETA members living in France.

Last January the French government decided that Basque refugees in France would no longer have the status of political refugees. Since then ETA has made several threats to damage French property.

The two kilogramme (four-point-four pound) bomb shattered windows, blew a hole in a wall and wrecked furniture in the early hours of the morning.

Three days before the consulate blast another bomb extensively damaged a branch of the French Credit Lyonnais bank in San Sebastian. ETA also claimed responsibility for that blast. Several alleged ETA members in France have been ordered out of the French Basque country. But on the same day as the consulate blast, a French court turned down a Spanish extradition request for two Basque militants. The two men were accused of taking part in the shooting of two civil guards in San Sebastian last September.
