  • Description

A CONTINGENT OF 337 TURKISH SOLDIERS DISEMBARKED YESTERDAY (MONDAY) FROM THE TURKISH NAVY SHIP "ONARAN" AT THE PORT OF FAMAGUSTA IN EASTERN CYPRUS. THE SOLDIERS WERE ARRIVING TO RELIEVE OTHERS STATIONED ON THE ISLAND.

SOON AFTER THE ARRIVAL OF THE TROOPS, A DISPUTE BROKE OUT BETWEEN TURKISH OFFICERS, UNITED NATIONS OFFICIALS AND CYPRUS GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS WHO COULD NOT AGREE WHETHER THE SUPPLIES ON BOARD THE SHIP SHOULD BE ALLOWED INTO THE ISLAND.

THE TURKISH TROOPS HAVE BEEN ALLOWED INTO CYPRUS ONLY AFTER A DIRECT APPEAL FROM THE UNITED NATIONS TO THE CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT NOT TO OPPOSE THE ROTATION OF SOLDIERS. TURKEY MAINTAINS 650 TROOPS ON THE ISLAND UNDER THE TREATY OF ALLIANCE WITH CYPRUS AND GREECE.

(THE DISPUTE OVER THE STORES DROUGHT WITH THE TROOPS, COMES AT THE SAME TIME AS A REPORT TO THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL BY THE SENOR PLAZA. HE HAD BEEN THE UNITED NATIONS MEDIATOR IN CYPRUS FOR SIX MONTHS, AND IN HIS REPORT HE URGES FURTHER TALKS ON THE ISLAND'S FUTURE. HE SUGGESTS FURTHER CONSULTATION PARTICULARLY BETWEEN GREEK CYPRIOT AND TURKISH CYPRIOT LEADERS, BUT ALSO CALLS FOR DISCUSSION INVOLVING GREECE, TURKEY AND BRITAIN.)
