  • Description

OUTDATED OIL TANKERS BUILT DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR ARE BEING QUICKLY CONVERTED TO MODERN CARGO VESSELS IN A NOVEL CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM INTRODUCED RECENTLY TO SHIPYARDS AT SCARAMANGA BAY IN GREECE.

THE BOWS AND STERNS OF THE T2 TYPE TANKERS ARE SLICED OFF IN ONE PIECE WITH ACETYLENE TORCHES AND WELDED ON TO A LARGER AND COMPLETELY NEW CENTRE SECTION. THE RESULT IN A SHORT SPACE OF TIME IS A NEW DRY CARGO SHIP OF UP TO 22,000 TONS.

FIRST VESSEL TO RESULT FROM THE CONVERSION WAS "WORLD CHARM", FORMERLY AN OBSOLETE 16,000 TON TANKER, WHICH SLID DOWN THE SLIPS ON APRIL 17 AS A GLEAMING NEW FREIGHTER. A TRADITIONAL BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE WAS SMASHED ACROSS THE VESSEL'S BOWS BY MRS.MARY CALANIS, WIFE OF THE DEPUTY GOVERNOR OF THE BANK OF GREECE.

THE SYSTEM, KNOWN AS "JUMBO-ISING", WAS FIRST INTRODUCED IN JAPAN.
