  • Description

WOMEN THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES TOOK PART IN A "STRIKE FOR PEACE" DEMONSTRATION NOV 1. LEAVING THEIR HOMES TO CARE FOR THEMSELVES, WOMEN FROM CITIES AND SMALL TOWNS GATHERED IN UNOFFICIAL MASS DEMONSTRATIONS OF REVULSION AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTING. TWO PLACES AFFECTED BY THE IRATE WOMEN WERE NEW YORK CITY AND ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY.

IN NEW YORK, THE WOMEN CONCENTRATED THEIR ATTENTION ON THE SOVIET CONSULATE. NEARLY TWO HUNDRED OF THEM, SOME PUSHING BABIES IN PERAMBULATORS AND ACCOMPANIED BY YOUNG CHILDREN, MARCHED IN THE STREET NEAR THE CONSULATE CARRYING BANNERS PROTESTING AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTING. THEY WERE SUPPORTING THE MAIN BODY OF WOMEN "STRIKERS" IN WASHINGTON, WHO PRESENTED PETITIONS TO THE WHITE HOUSE ADDRESSED TO MRS. KENNEDY, AND AT THE SOVIET EMBASSY ADDRESSED TO MRS. KHRUSHCHEV, CALLING ON THEM TO JOIN IN MAKING "THE SURVIVAL OF MANKIND THE ONE GREAT CAUSE OF OUR TIME".

THE MOTHERS OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY, CONGREGATED OUTSIDE THE TOWN'S COURTHOUSE. ABOUT TWO HUNDRED WOMEN IN THIS SMALL TOWN, SOME TWENTY MILES FROM NEW YORK CITY, TURNED OUT TO SUPPORT THE "STRIKE FOR PEACE". THEIR BLACK DRESSES WERE TO "MOURN THE FUTURE DEFORMITY OF CHILDREN AS A RESULT OF RADIATION FALL-OUT", AND THEY HAD THEIR OWN PETITION TO SUPPORT THESE BEING PRESENTED IN WASHINGTON.
