Background: A week after the military coup d'etat (on 11 September 1973) that overthrew Chile's Marxist Government, the capital Santiago is slowly returning overthrew Chile's Marxist Government, the capital santiago is slowly returning to normal. Shops are reopening and people are returning to work - at the order of the new authorities. The scheduled two days of celebrations to mark chile's 163rd anniversary of independence from Spain (18-19 September) were severely curtailed, and the second day was decreed a day of work.

Only two newspapers - both conservative and reflecting the views of the new rulers - are still obtainable of the many that once flourished. Political slogans and placards, for years a distinctive feature of Santiago, are being systematically removed and erased from the city's walls. Troops are prominent in the streets and the curfew is still in force.

Citizens still flock to the skeletal remains of La Moneda, the Presidential Place where Dr. Salvador Allende died. Crowds gather in silence outside the gutted building. The national football stadium has become a prison cap for thousands of Allende supporters. It's reported they are imprisoned on the pitch and interrogated in the dressing-rooms. The Government says 5,000 are being held; unofficial sources believed twice as may are detained. Many others are on the wanted list. An unknown number of people have sought refuge in foreign embassies. The largest group took shelter in the Mexican Embassy - among them Dr. Allende's widow and two of their daughters. They are ???eing flown out to Mexico City, as soon as safe conducts are obtained.
