  • Description

Both Houses of the Jordanian Parliament on Saturday (9 November) held extra-ordinary sessions to discuss and approve amendments to the constitution.

The amendments empower King Hussein to dissolve both the house of Representatives and the House of Notables in the light of a resolution adopted by the Arab Summit in Rabat last month. The Rabat resolution gave the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) sole responsibility for administering the West Bank of the Jordan, an area which provides half the members of the Jordanian Parliament.

The amendments to the Constitution also permit King Hussein, who is a constitutional monarch, to rule without elections for a year.

The Hashemite Kingdom will now be confined to the East Bank of the Jordan with the PLO having complete responsibility for the West Bank, now occupied by Israel.

King Hussein has rejected any notion of a confederation between Jordan and a Palestinien State that might eventually emerge and the eight hundred thousand Palestinians living in the East Bank area will have to choose whither or not to apply for Jordanian nationality.
