  • Description

The people of Rumania recently celebrated the 29th anniversary of the anti Fascist insurrection towards the end of the Second World War. On Thursday (August 23rd), President Nicolae Ceausescu watched a parade of the country's military forces as part of the celebrations.

Rumania's defence contingents were joined in Bucharest by workers from factories around the capital, and by farm labourers - some in national costume. President Ceausescu was joined on the rostrum by the Prime Minister Ion Gheorghe Maurer, and other members of the Government.

Twenty nine years ago, the alliance between Rumania and Germany ended, and German troops withdrew. Another alliance with Russia was formed, and shortly after a government composed of Communists, Social Democrats and members of the Ploughman's Front was set up, A Communist Government was set up in 1946, and the first constitution was adopted in 1948. Rumania was declared a Socialist Republic in 1965, and two years later President Ceausesco came to power.

For about twenty years Rumania remained under the influence of the Soviet Union. It has recently adopted a more independent foreign policy, including the development of friendly relations with the People's Republic of china.
