INTRODUCTION: The press preview of the Paris International Air Show was held on Thursday (2 June), the day before the official opening. A total of 627 aircraft manufacturers -- a record number -- from around the world are attending with 230 of their most advanced aircraft.

SYNOPSIS: The Paris Air Show is one of the main events in the aviation calendar. Much interest this year centres on the Soviet TU 144 -- or "Concordski". It's the first time the supersonic aircraft has appeared in public in the West since it crashed at Paris four years ago. A number of changes have reportedly been made to the aircraft's structure since the crash. The most noticeable change has been to the wings which are now extended for take off the landing to give greater stability at low speed. So far, the TU 144 has only been used commercially on a twice-weekly internal freight service.

Also on show in Paris is the Israeli-built Kfir jet fighter. The aircraft makes use of an airframe that is similar to the French Mirage 5 fighter. The Israelis say the Kfir is intended for both air defence and ground attack roles.

The aircraft manufacturers are now confident that the fuel crisis is a thing of the past and they can look forward to a period of growth in the industry.
