  • Description

GENERAL JOSEPH ANKRAH, GHARA'S HEAD OF STATE, FLEW TO NIAMEY YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) FORM OUGADOUGOU, UPPER VOLTA, FOR AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE NIGER REPUBLIC.

A 21-GUN SALUTE BOOMED OUT AS THE GENERAL ARRIVED AND WAS GREETED BY NIGER PRESIDENT, HAMANI DIORI. THE PRESIDENT GREETED THE GHANIAN LEADER WITH THE WORDS: "WELCOME TO THE HEAD OF ONE OF BLACK AFRICA'S RICHEST AND MOST POWERFUL NATIONS. WELCOME TO THE HEAD OF A GOVERNMENT WHICH, SINCE ITS FORMATION, HAS SHOWN ITSELF REALISTIC, LIBERAL, RESPECTFUL OF THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GHANA'S NEIGHBOURS, AND EAGER TO CONTRIBUTE POSITIVELY TO PEACE IN AFRICA AND THE WORLD, AND TO THE UNITY OF OUR CONTINENT."
IN HIS REPLY, GENERAL ANKRAH UNDERLINED PRESIDENT DIORI'S STATESMANSHIP AND POLITICAL MATURITY WHICH HAD ENABLED HIM TO MAKE AN EFFECTIVE AND CONSTRUCTIVE CONTRIBUTION TO THE WORK OF THE AFRO-MALAGASY COMMON ORGANISATION (OCAM) AND THE ENTENTE COUNCIL.

THE GHANIAN LEADERS SAID HE HOPED HIS VISIT TO NIAMEY WOULD GIVE HIM AN OPPORTUNITY TO FIND OUT FOR HIMSELF THE DEVELOPMENTS IN NIGER, AND EXCHANGE IDEAS ON MATTERS AFFECTING MUTUAL PROGRESS.

PRESIDENT DIORI IS CURRENT PRESIDENT OF OCAM AND HE IS EXPECTED TO BRIEF GENERAL ANKRAH ON THE RECENT OCAM SUMMIT MEETING IN NIAMEY.

DURING HIS FIVE DAY STAY, GENERAL ANKRAH IS EXPECTED TO VISIT SEVERAL PROVINCIAL TOWNS IN NIGER.
