Background: ENGLAND HAS GAINED A COMMANDING POSITION IN THE FIRST TWO DAYS OF THE FIRST TEST MATCH AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA. ENGLAND HAD SCORED 485 FOR FIVE WICKETS WHEN THEY DECLARED AND PUT SOUTH AFRICA IN. BY THE END OF THE DAY'S PLAY THE HOME SIDE HAD LOST THREE WICKETS FOR ONLY 20 RUNS.

GEOFF BOYCOTT, ENGLAND'S OPENER, WAS SELDOM BEATEN BY THE BALL, BUT HE BATTED SLOWLY AND CAUTIOUSLY, TREATING THE SPINNER SEYMOUR WITH RESPECT.

BOB BARBER, CLEARLY RECOVERED FROM HIS FOOT INJURY, PUSHED THE SCORE ALONG. WHEN HE WAS OUT FOR 74, HE WAS THROWING HIS BAT AT ALMOST EVERYTHING. BOWLED BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN CAPTAIN, GODDARD, BARBER VACATED THE CREASE WITH THE SCORE AT 120 - A GOOD START BY THE ENGLAND OPENERS.

TED DEXTER CAME IN AND WAS SOON IN HIS FLUENT STYLE, PUSHING THE SCORE ALONG. MICHAEL SEYMOUR, WHO WAS USED UNCHANGED FOR A THREE-HOUR-SPELL, CLAIMED THE WICKET OF DEXTER, CAUGHT AND BOWLED. DEXTER HAD SCORED A LIVELY 28.

BARRINGTON CAME IN FOR WHAT WAS TO BE A FINE INNINGS. BY THE CLOSE OF THE FIRST DAY'S PLAY BARRINGTON HAD SCORED 48. THE FOLLOWING DAY HE WAS TO CONTINUE TO AMASS RUNS AND FINISH WITH AN UNDEFEATED 148 NOT OUT. THE ENGLISH WICKET-KEEPER PARKS ALSO FINISHED WITH AN UNDEFEATED CENTURY.
