  • Description

The African summit conference which ended last night (Thursday) has decided to make a concerted effort to end the civil war in Nigeria: six Heads of State are going to Lagos to press for an early settlement between the Federal ruler, General Gowon, and Colonel Ojukwu, of breakaway Biafra. On his way to Kinshasa for the OAU summit, U Thant, Secretary-General of the United Nations, stopped over in Lagos for talks with Gowon.

Officials said that U Thant and General Gowon conferred for half an hour, and that the Nigerian crisis dominated their talks, President Tubman of Liberia also saw General Gowon with U Thant. President Tubman will be on the OAU delegation.

The sending of the six-nation team (from the Cameroun, Ethiopia, Congo-Kinshasa, Ghana, Liberia and Niger) was among the most important achievements of the Kinshasa summit.

The six men will appeal to General Gowon to settle the war "in a spirit of moderation and understanding." General Gowon has undertaken to meet the six State heads whenever they arrive.
