  • Description

THE DEATH TOLL FOLLOWING THE ERUPTION OF THE KELUD VOLCANO IN EAST JAVA LAST WEEK HAS TOPPED THE 100 MARK.

THE KELUD VOLCANO, A. 5,500 FT SUMMIT WHICH LIES 50 MILES. (80 KILOMETRES) SOUTH-WEST OF SURABAYA, BEGAN ERUPTING JUST OVER A WEEK AGO, SPILLING OUT ITS CRATER LAKE AND BURYING A NEARBY VILLAGE AS MOLTEN LAVA SPREAD OVER A WIDE AREA.

SHOWERS OF DUST AND GRIT FELL FOR MILES AROUND THE VOLCANO AND LAVA FLOWS FILLED NEARBY RIVERS. THE LAVA WRECKED A BRIDGE AND RUINED THE CROPS AT A TEA AND COFFEE PLANTATION. THE WHOLE AREA BENEATH THE MOUNTAIN WAS CARPETED IN A THICK LAYER OF DUST.

TOWN AND VILLAGES IN THE AREA WERE EVACUATED AS THE LAVA THREAT CONTINUED IN THE DAYS FOLLOWING THE FIRST ERUPTION. THE TOWN OF BLITAR, WIPED OUT WHEN THE VOLCANO ERUPTED IN 1919, WAS AGAIN COVERED IN DUST AND ASH AND THREATENED BY THE BOILING RIVERS.

KELUD, WHICH IS KNOWN TO KEEP TO A 15-YEAR CYCLE OF ERUPTIONS, LAST BLEW UP IN 1951.

AS SOON AS IT WAS POSSIBLE THE INDONESIAN HOME AFFAIRS MINISTER, MAJOR-GENERAL BASUKI RACHMAT, TRAVELLED TO THE AFFLICTED AREA WITH A PARTY OF OFFICIALS AND VOLUNTARY HELPERS TO INSPECT THE DAMAGE.

APART FROM THOSE KILLED AT LEAST 600 PEOPLE WERE INJURED BY THE ERUPTION.
