A transcript of his speech follows:
LINDSAY: "I will not seek a third term as Mayor, this decision is based on personal considerations and it is final. I believe I could win a third term, my love for this city and the work still to be done have tempted me to carry on -- eight years is too short a time, but it is long enough for one man. I intend to continue to fight for progressive Independent government for New York, and I expect to be an active force for good government in this city and state, and in the democratic party for years to come.
"The battle for the cities will go on. Across this nation the struggle continues for rational urban priorities, and whatever my future I will always give my voice and my strength to that fight. Thank you very much indeed."
