  • Description

Snow forced the cancellation of New York's traditional Easter Parade on Sunday (March 29). The few Easter bonnets visible were more for protection against winter than decoration.

Thousands of people worshipped at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. But afterwards they scurried for taxis and buses instead of waiting for the Easter Parade or watching the amateur models at another famous landmark, Rockefeller Plaza.

Fifth Avenue -- normally closed to traffic for the annual parade on Easter Sunday -- was deserted. the colourful Easter bonnets usually seen in abundance at this time of the year were fur lined or hidden under umbrellas.

The scene was the same at Rockefeller Centre, where in previous years hundreds of women have paraded in the latest fashions, wearing elaborate hats in front of television cameras.

The snow storm deposited more than two inches (five cms) of snow and sleet on New York -- only one week after spring officially began.
