PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA ADDRESSED ABOUT 10,000 PEOPLE AT AN ELECTION RALLY, AT NAKURU, IN CENTRAL KENYA, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). HE SPOKE AS THE HEAD OF THE RULING KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION.

ELECTIONS ARE TAKING PLACE NEXT WEEKEND IN 30 CONSTITUENCIES, TO FIND REPLACEMENTS FOR THE 30 MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT WHO RESIGNED FROM KANU.

PRESIDENT KENYATTA SAID THAT HIS PARTY WOULD NOT REST UNTIL THE NEWLY-FORMED KENYA PEOPLE'S UNION -- SET UP BY THE DISSIDENT KANU MEMBERS -- WAS COMPLETELY CRUSHED.

THE NAKURU AREA IS A STRONGHOLD OF KPU AND, IN PARTICULAR, MR. ACHIENG ONEKO, UNTIL RECENTLY THE COUNTRY'S INFORMATION MINISTER. MR. KENYATTA IS REPORTED TO HAVE SAID THAT IT WAS A PITY TO SEE MR. ONEKO "WHOM I HAVE TRAINED INTO POLITICS, DARE TO TURN AGAINST ME POLITICALLY."
MR. ONEKO HAS JOINED KPU, WHICH IS LED BY FORMER VICE-PRESIDENT OGINGA ODINGA.

ADDING THAT THE DISSIDENTS HAD BEEN "BOUGHT" PRESIDENT KENYATTA SAID HE DECLARED WAR AGAINST THEM. THE ONLY REASON WHY KPU HAD BEEN RECOGNISED, THE PRESIDENT WENT ON, WAS SIMPLY SO THAT THE DISSIDENTS COULD NOT SAY THAT KANU WAS AFRAID OF OPPOSITION.
