Background: United States Presidential envoy Dr. Henry Kissinger met President Georges Pompidou at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Friday (May 18) before resuming peace talks with North Vietnam.

President Pompidou is due to meet President Nixon in Iceland at the end of May to discuss a new Atlantic Charter and Dr. Kissinger's proposals for an Anglo-French nuclear force.

Dr. Kissinger wants to arrange a ceasefire in the Khmer Republic similar to that in Laos and South Vietnam. North Vietnam is pressing for the resumption of full-scale mine-sweeping operations off its coast and the release of political prisoners in South Vietnam.

It is believed that Dr. Kissinger will fly back to Washington soon to report to President Nixon. He will then return to Paris to finalise a strengthened settlement.
