SYNOPSIS: The British Columbia minister of highways ---- Phil Gaglardi --takes a look at one of the biggest construction jobs ever undertaken in B.C. It's the Deas Island Tunnell -- when it is opened some time in November, it will carry traffic beneath the Fraser River at Richmond, near Vancouver. Mr. Gaglardi's visit coincided with the opening of the first link between the two halves of the tunnel -- a bulkhead was opened allowing the foot party to walk from shore to shore for the first time. On passing through the final door, they were greeted by O.H. Bentzen, superintendent for the company constructing the tunnel. The work of lining and equipping the tunnel continues, but it should be open for road traffic in five months.
