    The Sisters of Our Lady of Africa Mission in Uganda celebrated their centenary on Thursday (13 May) by going about the teaching, social and medical work they have been undertaking for the past one hundred years. The nearly forty sisters who work at the Villa Maria Mission in Masaka, south of Kampala, are part of an order with members not only in other African countries but in many other parts of the world as well.

    SYNOPSIS: Here, at the Villa Maria Mission in Masaka, south of the Ugandan capital of Kampala, a celebration was observed on Thursday to mark the centenary of the Sisters of Our Lady in Africa Mission. The celebration was marked by the sisters primarily by a continuation of their normal work.

    The some forty sisters at the Villa Maria Mission spend their time doing medical and social work and teaching. Within the Mission there's medical ward in which examinations and even operations can be carried out. To mark the centenary, Pope Paul sent the sisters a message of praise for the work they're doing at the Mission.

    The order was founded in 1869. Since then, members of the order have gone not only to Uganda and other African nations, but to countries throughout much of the world. From its earliest beginnings in Algeria, the order has been helping people in the areas where the sisters live.

    While in Uganda, the Sisters have built medical facilities, schools and undertaken social work helping many people. At the beginning of the century, the Sisters even tried to introduce credit unions to stimulates small-scale economic development. Among the Villa Maria Mission's facilities is a school for local children.

    Last year, there were more than 2,000 members of the Sisters of Our Lady in Africa Mission. In Africa, they're represented in a number of countries. including Ghana, Kenya, Mali and Zambia.
