    FEDERAL NIGERIAN FORCES ARE REPORTED TO HAVE REINFORCED THEIR HOLD ON THE STRATEGIC TOWN OF ONITSHA, ON THE BANK OF THE NIGER RIVER 67 MILES (107 K.M.) FROM ENUGU, CAPITAL OF THE SECESSIONIST PROVINCE OF EASTERN NIGERIA.

    ONITSHA IS ON THE EASTERN REGION SIDE OF THE GBP6 1/2-MILLION STERLING BRIDGE SPANNING THE NIGER RIVER. THE BRIDGE HAS BEEN DESTROYED.

    ONITSHA HAS A POPULATION OF 80-THOUSAND PEOPLE, AND IS A MARKET COMMUNITY.

    THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS OF SEVERE FIGHTING IN THE ONITSHA REGION. AN EASTERN REGION MILITARY DESPATCH CLAIMED THAT MORE THAN ONE THOUSAND FEDERAL NIGERIA TROOPS HAD BEEN KILLED IN THE BATTLE FOR THE TOWN. THE SECESSIONIST ARMY DESPATCH CLAIMED THAT THE FEDERAL TROOPS HAD BEEN REPULSED DURING AN ATTEMPTED AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT ACROSS THE NIGER RIVER.

    FEDERAL TROOPS SHELLED ONITSHA DURING THE ATTACK FIRING MORTAR SHELLS AND SMALL ARTILLERY. MUCH OF THE CITY HAS BEEN HIT, AND MANY FIRES HAVE BEEN REPORTED.THE FEDERAL ASSAULT ON ONITSHA WAS MADE FROM THE DIRECTION OF ASABA. ONE REPORT SAYS THAT FEDERAL FORCES. AFTER BATTLING THEIR WAY ACROSS THE NIGER RIVER, FOUND ONITSHA DESERTED.
