  • Description

FOR THE BULGARIAN PEOPLE, SEPTEMBER 9 IS A DAY OF CELEBRATION, FOR IT IS BULGARIA'S LIBERTY DAY. IT RECOGNISES THE DAY -- SEPTEMBER 9, 1944 -- WHEN THE BULGARIAN ARMY ROSE IN REBELLION AND OVERTHREW THE PRO-GERMAN GOVERNMENT.

ON FRIDAY, CELEBRATIONS WERE HELD FOR THE 23RD ANNIVERSARY OF THE UPRISING THROUGHOUT BULGARIA. AND IN SOFIA, ONE OF THE LARGEST SQUARES IN THE CAPITAL, NINTH OF SEPTEMBER SQUARE, WAS PACKED WITH PEOPLE WATCHING AN ANNIVERSARY MARCH-PAST.

THE SEPTEMBER 9 UPRISING FOLLOWED THE COLLAPSE OF BULGARIA'S WAR EFFORT, WHICH UNTIL THEN HAD BEEN RANGED ALONGSIDE NAZI GERMANY. CIVIL AND MILITARY UNREST FORCED THE GOVERNMENT OF THE TIME TO WITHDRAW FROM THE WAR, DEMAND THE DISARMAMENT OF GERMAN TROOPS ON ITS SOIL, AND TO DECLARE A POLICY OF NEUTRALITY.

THIS, HOWEVER, WAS UNACCEPTABLE TO THE SOVIET GOVERNMENT, WHOSE TROOPS WERE ADVANCING RAPIDLY THROUGH EASTERN EUROPE. ON SEPTEMBER 9, THE ARMY MUTINY PUT THE BULGARIAN FATHERLAND FRONT IN POWER AND THIS ANTI-GERMAN MOVEMENT ALMOST IMMEDIATELY SOUGHT PEACE WITH THE SOVIET UNION AND DECLARED WAR ON GERMANY. THE BULGARIAN FORCES TOOK AN ACTIVE PART IN THE FINAL DEFEAT OF THE THIRD REICH.

ON FRIDAY, THE 23RD ANNIVERSARY OF THE UPRISING, A BIG PARADE WAS MOUNTED THROUGH THE STREETS OF SOFIA. WORKERS AND STUDENTS, YOUTH ORGANISATIONS AND SCHOOLCHILDREN TOOK PART. IN NINTH OF SEPTEMBER SQUARE, OFFICIALS OF BULGARIA'S GOVERNMENT REVIEWED THE PARADE AND THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ENJOYING THEIR NATIONAL HOLIDAY JOINED IN THE PATRIOTIC OCCASION.
