  • Description

President Eisenhower arrived by air Augusta, Georgia, Jan 7, and went on by helicopter to nearby Fort Gordon, where he said a nostalgic farewell to the United States Army.

Received with a 21-gun salute and the national anthem, the President - who relinquishes his duties as C-in-C on Jan 20 - was accompanied by Col.Guidera as he rode in a jeep along a line of 2,500 troops.

Speaking to the men, the outgoing Commander-in-Chief briefly dwelt on military reminiscences. He said: "Fifty years ago I entered the military service. This is the last review I shall ever receive in my life." Eisenhower took the opportunity to say good-bye to the Army - "an Army that has had all these years not only my admiration and affection, but my deep feeling of confidence that in such bodies as this, and in your sister services, the United States has a shield that no enemy dare attack or attempt to break down".
