SYNOPSIS: Guest of honour at ceremonies marking the sixth anniversary of President Mobutu of Zaire's rise to power was the President of Chad. President Tombalbaye drove through the streets of the capital of Zaire, Kinshasa to a dais where he and President Mobutu were to watch a ceremonial parade.

President Mobutu arrived only hours after making a major speech in which he accused some foreign business circles in Kinshasa of spreading false rumours about the country. The rumour-mongers, he said, were guilty of subversion.

The new flags of the Zaire Republic were prominent as the ceremonial parade began. Included in the parade -- armoured vehicles of the Zaire Army. About a sixth of the budget in the Zaire Republic is spent on defence.

Economists see the six years of President Mobutu's leadership as a period in which the country has moved from disorder to comparative stability. Statistics show a steadily improving standard of living.

A squad of women's airborne troops was included in the parade.

The largest problem faced by President Mobutu in the six years marked by this parade was the unifying of the country. In an effort to bring about reconciliation the President last year offered an amnesty to all those who took part in the insurrections during the early sixties -- some reports say several thousand people returned from exile abroad.

President Mobutu's effort to generate unity culminated a few weeks ago when it was announced that his country would henceforth be known as the Republic of Zaire.

Although this ceremonial parade placed emphasis on the efficiency of the country's armed forces, other groups also took part. These included representatives of various youth and worker organisations.
