  • Description

The young people of Nairobi turned out on Saturday (7 July) to clean up the rubbish and debris in the Mathare Valley -- one of the worst of Nairobi's slum districts.

Marking the end of Harambee Youth Week, the young people gathered in City Stadium to hear an address from Nairobi Provincial Commissioner Mr. G. Mburu.

The youngsters then wept through the Mathare Valley area, moving debris and the worst of the unsightly rubbish dumps which disfigure the area.

The Nairobi City Council has embarked on a clean-up programme but find it hampered by lack of money.

Harambee Youth Week was declared in 1968 by President Jomo Kenyatta, and National Youth Day was set as the first Sunday in July, the day after this year's cleanup.

Nairobi Provincial Commissioner Mr. G. Mburu addressed the young people.

Then, the youngsters marched to the city yards, to get aboard trucks for the journey to one of Nairobi's worst slum districts for a day-long cleanup campaign.

Harambee Youth Week was started in nineteen sixty-eight by President Kenyatta and occurs the first week in July, capped by National Youth Day.

This year, the young people were marking the occasion by the cleanup in the Mathare Valley -- one of the most notorious and unsightly slume.

Wielding brooms and shovels the youngsters attacked rubbish dumps around the district, loading it into city-provided trucks for disposal. Their cleanup was one of several projects throughout Kenya marking the youth week.
