  • Description

BRITAIN'S FIRST JET AIRLINER CAPABLE OF CROSSING THE ATLANTIC IN ONE SHOP - THE REAR-ENGINED "VICKERS VC-10"- JUNE 29 MADE A SUCCESSFUL MAIDEN FLIGHT FROM WEYBRIDGE, IN SURREY, TO WISLEY, FOUR MILES AWAY.

THE "VC-10" IS EUROPE'S BIGGEST AIRLINER; AND THE MAKERS HOPE IT WILL BE CHALLENGING THE "BOEINGS" ON WORLD PASSENGER SERVICES NEXT YEAR. IT WILL CARRY UP TO 151 PASSENGERS AT SPEED OF UP TO 600 MILES AN HOUR. VICKERS CLAIM THE REAR-ENGINED LAYOUT MEANS A CLEANER, HIGHER PERFORMANCE WING AND A QUIETER CABIN.

FOUR OF THE NEW "ROLLS-ROYCE CONWAY" ENGINES TOGETHER DELIVER 33,000 HORSE-POWER. THEY HAD THE EIGHTY-TON GIANT OFF THE GROUND IN 800 YARDS - A PHENOMENALLY SHORT RUN. THE "VC-10" IS THE WORLD'S FIRST BIG JET CAPABLE OF FULLY AUTOMATIC LANDING.

NONE OF THE FEARS ABOUT DEAFENING NOISE, SHATTERED WINDOWS AND THE PERILS OF TAKING OFF FROM TINY WEYBRIDGE WERE REALISED. SO FAR, 54 OF THE PLANES HAVE BEEN ORDERED - 42 OF THEM FOR B.O.A.C.
