  • Description

Policemen and women in the Paris area made their grievances public on Tuesday (17 June) when they took a petition to their Prefect, the Head of their Force, demanding improvements. A rota system was carefully worked out so that off-duty police could join the delegation which delivered the list of demands.

The police involved were all members of the uniformed branch, but they wore civilian clothes on the demonstration.

They are demanding a monthly allowance of 400 Francs (about L40), an extra two weeks holiday in the winter, improved living quarters, and better conditions of employment for the women in the force. As well they want government subsidies to finance better training programmes, and to increase the number of staff.

The police say they are not being adequately compensated for working on average a fifteen hour day, sometimes more. As well, they are not allowed to leave their homes without permission, even when off-duty. Because of this, and the increasing cost of living the police say many in the force are leaving to join the CRS (the Paris riot squad) or they are leaving the capital altogether to work in the provinces where the cost of living is less.

SYNOPSIS: On Tuesday Policemen and women in the Paris area took their grievances to the head of their force, the Prefect.

The police, although in civilian clothes, are all members of the uniformed branch. They had carefully worked out rota systems so a maximum number could attend the demonstration while off-duty.

One of their demands is for better employment conditions for women in the force.

As well, the police want an increased salary, two weeks extra holidays in the winter, improved living quarters, better training and more staff. They complain the cost of living is forcing many to leave their jobs, or transfer to the provinces.
